| Bio | She is a Japanese tennis player. She first played tennis in her last year of kindergarten and began attending tennis school in her first year at Joetsu University of Education Elementary School. She entered Joetsu University of Education Junior High School, and made it to the top four in the National Junior Tennis Tournament for two consecutive years in her first and second years of junior high school. She also made it to the top four in the All Japan Junior Tennis Championships in his second year and was runner-up in her third year of junior high school. In 2016, during her third year of junior high school, she won the National Junior High School Tennis Championship. She went on to Yamanashi Gakuin High School , but transferred to the correspondence school Shoyo Gakuen High School when she entered her second year and joined the tennis academy Team YUKA. Sakatsume won ITF Kyoto $15K in her debut season on the ITF circuit in 2018. In her second year of high school, she won the All Japan Junior Tennis Championships and turned professional in the spring of 2019 after her second year of high school. She played first full year on ITF circuit in 2019, earning her second title at Nonthaburi $15K. At the All Japan Tennis Championships in October 2021, she lost to Mana Kawamura in the quarterfinals , but still achieved her best result to date, reaching the quarterfinals. She earned two further ITF titles in 2021, both at Monastir $15K events. Sakatsume made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at the 2022 Championnats de Granby, after entering the singles tournament as a lucky loser, but was defeated by Jasmine Paolini in the first round. In October 2022, she participated in the All Japan Tennis Championships as the top seed, defeating Hina Terui in the second round, Riko Sawayanagi in the third round, Rina Saigo in the quarterfinals, Aoi Ito in the semifinals , and Momoko Kobori in the final to win the championship. She is the first player from Niigata Prefecture to win the championship. Also she played qualifying at Tokyo (lost to Papamichail). She made her debut for the Japan Billie Jean King Cup team on April 13, 2023 in a tie against Uzbekistan. She beat Sabrina Olimjanova and registered her first BJK Cup win. In April 2023, a support group was established, attended by local members of the Diet and Niigata Prefectural Assembly. In May, she won the Kangaroo Cup International Women's Open Tennis tournament on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour W80 , marking her fifth ITF Tour victory and her first in the W80 category. She entered her first Grand Slam’s in 2023, playing qualifying at Roland Garros (lost to Arango), Wimbledon (defeated by Burel) and US Open where she reached Q3 (lost versus Juvan). In 2023, Sakatsume won ITF Gifu $80K by defeating Boulter in the final, taking her ranking into Top 200. Standout results came on home soil in Japan reaching 2r at Osaka (as qualifier, lost to Wang Xinyu) and 1r at Tokyo (lost against Noskova). Having made it through qualifying, Sakatsume reached the second round at the Japan Women's Open with a win over Alexandra Eala, before losing to third seed Wang Xinyu. She made her WTA 500 debut at the 2023 Pan Pacific Open as a lucky loser, suffering a first round defeat to Linda Nosková. She won sixth ITF singles title in 2024 at W35 Taipei; played qualifying at Auckland, Australian Open, Hua Hin, Roland Garros and Osaka. As a qualifier, Sakatsume reached her maiden WTA quarterfinal at the 2025 Hong Kong Open, defeating fourth seed Sofia Kenin for her first win against a top-100 ranked player and then overcoming wildcard entrant Eudice Chong, before losing to fifth seed Maya Joint in three sets. Also she reached SF at Porto 125 (lost versus Valentova). |
