Biography

As an American female athlete of rare versatility and unwavering determination, Mary K. Browne scaled extraordinary heights in both tennis and golf. She started down the competitive path in tennis, sweeping three consecutive singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles at the U.S. National Championships from 1912-14. At Wimbledon, she once captured the doubles title in 1924, and when she was 33, Browne reached the semifinals at Forest Hills and pushed Helen Wills to three sets. Not long after that, she made it to the final of the U.S. Women’s Golf Championships

She has been inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1957.
