Biography

A native of Philadelphia, who died at 40 in 1909, she competed for a relatively brief time, but accomplished much in that span. In 1888, Townsend upended defending champion Ellen Hansell to secure the U.S. Championships Singles title. A year later, as if to underline that she belonged in that exclusive territory, she successfully defended her championship. Beaten in 1890 by Ellen Roosevelt in the Challenge Round, Townsend got married, and then returned to competition in 1894, but she was unable to replicate her old winning ways.
.
She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1974
