Bio An ace on the court, Harold C. Solomon began playing tennis when he was 5. He won the Orange Bowl World Junior Championships in 1969 and 1970 and the U.S. Junior Clay Court Championships in 1970, and he was the U.S. Tennis Association National Boys’ 18 Singles Champion in 1970. Solomon earned All-American honors during his time at Rice, turning professional at the end of his sophomore year in 1972. A marquee player during the 1970s and 1980s, he won multiple championships and was a member of the 1972 and 1978 championship Davis Cup teams. Solomon retired from the ATP Tour in 1986 and began coaching such tennis greats as Mary Joe Fernandez, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles and Jim Courier in the early 1990s. He currently teaches at the Harold Solomon International Tennis Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

In 1994, he was inducted into the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section Hall of Fame and in 2004, into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
He was ranked No. 5 in the world in singles (1980) and his highest rank was No. 4 in the world in doubles (1976).
